Happy New Year - New Year, New Me???

It's that time of year when you think about new starts and remember unfinished ones from previous years.  I am rather disappointed that I wasn't able to keep the blog going.  It barely even got off the ground.  I think the biggest issue I had was that it is rather difficult to blog about issues and thoughts I have about internal audit when there is the need to remain anonymous.  I would love to be able to blog about my work but I would hate for anyone at work to see it.  There is always a very slim risk that they could search for same subjects that I am working on.   I am not currently at work and I am rethinking (yet again) whether audit is the right career for me or may be it is just a case that I am working for the wrong organisation/boss.

I do love auditing but I struggle with the very limited amount of time I have to carry out the audits. I was always rubbish at time management but still I often think what is the point of doing the work if you are not going to do it properly. I appreciate that limited resources have to be used sparingly but you need to be able to give reasonable assurance surely otherwise what is the point of wasting any time looking at anything.

I also never got to grips with the paperwork.  I never had proper on the job training or got the bread and butter audits that the older auditors tell me they learnt the job on.

I don't know what I need to do to become a confident auditor.  The older auditors that I admire say my fieldwork is thorough and good so why do I always feel like the dumbest person in the room?

Whilst I am off I am going to try reading the IIA magazines and see if I can build up my knowledge and hopefully my confidence.  I just need to find the time...

  1. Keep a blog going is hard work. I'm on year 7, and it has been up and down, but worth it.

As for remaining anonymous, just change a few details here and there. The chances of your colleagures stumbling across your blog is pretty slim. Most auditors don't spend their time on the internet trying to get better. Most only think about auditing while at work. That's okay, and I'm not criticizing (well, maybe a little); I just point that out for what it's worth.

Also, I'd strongly urge you not to require so much work to leave a comment. That's really annoying, and will cut the number of comments you get. I depend on wordpress' Askimet software, and it does a good job.
